This book was a lucky find among the various orders I placed. The CD included is really phenomenal, and a grand review of things I had forgotten.. I really can't recommend this book highly enough. If you know nothing about playing the guitar, this is the next best thing to live instruction. It starts from square one and will have you playing a few simple songs in a very short time.

The split screen technique on the video is very effective, with two frames each showing a close-up of a hand, and a third frame showing the whole player. The book has nice, big photos of hand positions for the chords - not just dots on a fret board diagram - which is also very helpful. The only down side is that it won't take you very far. The book contains only 17 chords, which may sound like a lot if you've never played, but many popular songs need chords not covered in the book.

It wouldn't have cost them that much more to add another dozen or so. I really like this book and DVD. Since I am a beginning guitar player, the lessons are easy to understand and follow. I truly am learning a lot about how to play the different chords, how to transition between chords, etc.

Also, I can always replay a particular lesson if I need to refer back to something. For a beginner, I think this book and DVD is a great place to start. My nephew plays the cello. He is really good -- he's in the youth symphony. I thought a book about playing guitar, which he has recently taken up, had to have really good reviews in order to be worth his time since he already knows so much about music. This one had really good reviews, included the cd, and apparently has been just what he wanted -- he even wrote me a thank you note, which I have NEVER received from him before.

I gave this DVD as a gift to my husband for Christmas in The DVD is great! It's challenging, but works. Also, there's a loop feature so you can watch the same 5 minute segment again and again. The instructor shows cords, transitions, and songs. The book is not all that great or helpful, but the DVD is worth it. What kind of exercises can you expect? Each day of the week, you get a different type of exercise to keep things varied and interesting: Monday: Alternate picking, Tuesday: String skipping, Wednesday: String bending, Thursday: Arpeggios, Friday: Sweep picking, Saturday: Legato, Sunday: Rhythm.

This book isn't specifically for beginner guitar players, as it isn't a course book. Nevertheless, it makes for a great supplementary book to a beginner's guitar studies. Remember, the book provides 1 exercise a day. It pushed your limits each and every day in baby steps, and after days, you will definitely be a better guitar player than you are today. You have to spend time with each exercise though, you can't just rush through things.

You won't be able to play all of the exercises up to speed on day 1, so you should revisit them again and again until you get them perfected. The book urges you to use the metronome and increase your BPM as you can. The reason I like the concept behind this guitar book is that it forces the student to pick up the guitar every single day. The only way to progress at the guitar is to practice regularly, and by its nature, this 1 exercise per day book sets out to do just that.

Music Theory for Guitarists by Tom Kolb If you've been learning to play guitar for a while, you will have undoubtedly heard references to music theory bits that you didn't understand.

This is a book meant to fill these holes in your knowledge. Learning music theory is not important for beginner guitarists, but after reaching an intermediate level, learning about music theory really helps in putting it all together.

It covers pretty much everything a guitarist needs to know with respect to music theory. The book starts out with the fretboard, key signatures, intervals, and continues on to teach about scales, chords construction, key centers.

Towards the end, it teaches modes and modal harmony, chord substitution and reharmonization as well. What I really liked about the book is that it has quizzes to get you to test your knowledge. Also, there are about audio tracks demonstrating what is being taught, which is very important in learning music.

After garnering hundreds of reviews, it scores an average of 4. Other books covering the subject don't score so high since music theory is sometimes presented in a boring tone.
